73 year-old De Havilland Dragon
Bi-plane Maiden Outback Flight

Des Porter, Adrian Ross and Les Nixon

November, 2004

I've just flown 38-hours in 8-days in Des Porter’s brand-new 73 year-old De Havilland Dragon bi-plane maiden outback flight. He flew an Outback Patrol.

Adrian Ross came along for the ride: hardly! Rather, for the ministry; he worked harder and sweat more than a bush ditch digger!

At Alice Springs, Adrian’s Didgeredoo on School-of-the-Air live video hit the spot. They could see each other; some children on homesteads hundreds of miles apart, way west deep in the desert country. When they saw him on their screens, some hollered in disbelief?  “He's really here....”

Adrian signed school wall with favourite verse, right next to Margaret Thatcher’s. A local video’d the evening away at Charleville; will repeat it endlessly.  Shy children craned necks,  whispered: “Others that’s Mr. Nixon,” from last visits. Quilpie school promised to pray about returning, and Wilcannia manager lamented town’s children returned to petrol sniffing, X-rated videos and lawlessness.

Adrian latched onto that and spent worthwhile hour reaching the hearts of 83 of  them with music and ministry. “When you comen back?” they pleaded.

Birdsville wedding was due next day, and then one of the few church services all year.  Des kept taking the Flying Doctors for circuits; they used Dragons in the 50’s, before the Nixons.

We carried police Satellite Phones to remote Mt.Dare en-route. Broken Hill High School boss regretted time only for short session due exams, rushed us on, then asked Adrian to continue, as things were going so well, then took credit for bringing such high quality for the students. Another booked Adrian for a ‘Oreconciliation’ event later.

Talked to black-tracker who found downed tourist off motor-cycle in deadly Simpson Desert.  Paid $185 landing and $150 permits at Ayers Rock to fly in, just to attend the school.  Roxby evening with 80; “Such a happy time; wished we could do it always!” Filmmaker Peter Moss caught eight-hours of professional video that week,  every aspect of the meetings, which will be edited into several productions in 005.  Only Curtis’s at Broken Hill seemed to remember Les & Martha in their Dragon there in the 60’s and 70’s. Des's Dragon picture in the paper next day.

Early starts, slow flights, never missed a deadline, late nights; faced around 4000 children and parents in the 8-days, in places outback rarely reached for Jesus Christ until we go. Explorers Magazine goes every month and OFly,n’hi’ radio Monday nights.

Will you invest some of your stewardship and help us get these videos into 1000 hands and hearts who are ready to hear the team again, while it’s hot, and to consider where Jesus fits into their future. Your gift is important. (And we want to go back there again and again, too....)
